California's Mercury News reports that Girl Scouts worldwide are celebrating their group's centennial, and the Girl Scouts of Northern California are thinking big.
The group's event, planned for Saturday at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, is expected to draw more than 20,000 participants, plus 3,000 vendors and volunteers. There will be scouts from 34 states, Brazil, Canada, China, Spain and South Korea. About 4,500 scouts from California's northernmost troops will be camping out on the fairgrounds.
"We are so excited to be putting together the Girl Scout experience of a lifetime and to gather together to celebrate with Girl Scout sisters and supporters from across the globe," said Marina Park, CEO of Girl Scouts of Northern California.
Actress and singer Caroline Sunshine, star of the Disney show "Shake It Up" and a former California Girl Scout, will be at the event for an on-stage question and answer session. Nickelodeon's Cymphonique Miller and Max Schneider, from the TV show "How to Rock," will be doing a meet and greet and then playing tennis with kids at an inflatable tennis court.
The event will also include rock climbing, zip lines, scuba, archery, robots, arts and crafts, games, technology exhibits, a Girl Scout heritage museum, service projects, jousting, obstacle courses, animal talks by the staff of "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom", live entertainment all day, fly fishing and outdoor skills demonstrations.
