I also saw my Grandfather go through the flooding in Gainsville, Texas many many years ago and he did rebuild, but it took a while. As well as the zoo having to move animals. <br />

My family moved to Napa, CA in 1976 from LaPuente, CA. My parents had divorced and my Mom fell in love with my future stepfather. I was entering 6th grade and my sister was going into 3rd grade. We attended Shearer Elementary. We were in the old elementary school and a new school would be be that year. I absolutely loved this school and we were the last 6th grade class to leave the school. My class was on the second floor and we had long ramps to the second floor. It was pretty special. <br />

After years of pressure, SeaWorld made a surprise announcement: It no longer breeds killer whales in captivity and will soon stop making them leap from their pools or splash audiences on command.</div>

Surrendering Thursday to a profound shift in how people feel about using animals for entertainment, the SeaWorld theme parks have joined a growing list of industries dropping live animal tricks. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is retiring all of its touring elephants in May. Once-popular animal shows in Las Vegas have virtually disappeared.</div>

"Society's attitude toward these very, very large, majestic animals under human care has shifted for a variety of reasons, whether it's a film, legislation, people's comments on the Internet," SeaWorld Entertainment CEO Joel Manby said. Over the years, Doodles have marked the achievements of women in science, civil rights, journalism, sports, arts, technology and beyond. But for our 2016 International Women’s Day Doodle, we wanted to celebrate the next generation of Doodle-worthy women—the engineers, educators, leaders, movers and shakers of tomorrow.<br /><br />So we visited 13 cities around the world and asked 337 girls and women to complete the sentence “One Day I Will...” Then, we made this video. <br /><br />From San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Lagos, Moscow, Cairo, Berlin, London, Paris, Jakarta, Bangkok, New Delhi and Tokyo, the women we met make up a diverse mosaic of personalities, ages and backgrounds. And their aspirations are just as varied—ranging from the global to the very personal, from discovering more digits of pi to becoming a mother to giving a voice to those who can’t speak. <br /><br />We also asked some more familiar figures to participate, including anthropologist Jane Goodall—who wants to discuss the environment with the Pope—and Nobel Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai and activist Muzoon Almellehan, who are working fearlessly toward a future where every girl can go to school. Despite already impressive accomplishments under their belts, these women continue to dream big. <br /><br />Video creators: Lydia Nichols, Helene Leroux & Liat Ben-Rafael<br />Original music: Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs <a class="yt-uix-sessionlink " data-sessionlink="ei=My3fVqjSCcnA-gPM_ofYCg" href="http://tuneyards.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://tuneyards.com</a>)</div>

In addition, researchers from the Duke Cancer Institute report that providing <a href="http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART02791/self-healing-meditation.html">meditation</a> can improve the effectiveness of the biopsy procedure, which can be compromised if women move during the procedure. The researchers enrolled 121 women scheduled for a stereotactic and ultrasound guided (needle) breast biopsy and randomly assigned them to a recorded meditation, music or the usual care with a technologist offering support. The meditation, described as a guided "loving/kindness" script, focused on building positive emotions and releasing negative ones. Patients assigned to listen to music could choose from several types available. Before and after the biopsy the women completed questionnaires measuring their nervousness and anxiety and ranking their pain on a scale of zero (low) to 10 (high). "Both meditation and music reduced patient anxiety and fatigue," said study leader Mary Scott Soo, M.D. in a press release accompanying publication of the study. However, the women in the meditation group reported significantly less pain than those in the music group.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12971411588450504638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840498140859185978.post-79505416179550451602016-02-10T13:22:00.004-08:002016-02-10T13:22:52.093-08:00<a href="http://www.timesheraldonline.com/sports/20160206/bethel-high-graduate-cj-anderson-looks-to-shine-in-his-second-super-bowl?source=most_viewed" target="_blank">Bethel High graduate C.J. <div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Bethel High graduate and Denver Broncos running back C.J. Anderson will turn 25 years old on Wednesday and he already knows what he wants for a present. It doesn’t even need to be wrapped, but a lot of confetti will suffice.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“Most definitely I know what I want,” Anderson said on the phone earlier this week. “Hopefully, we win the Super Bowl on the 7th and then we host a parade on my birthday on the 10th. That would be perfect.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Although the former Jaguar is only in his third NFL season, he will be playing in his second Super Bowl on Sunday in Santa Clara against the Carolina Panthers. This time the game is a little different for Anderson, as evident from how he reacted moments after Denver defeated the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game two weeks ago.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“Going back home ... for free!” Anderson said on video, with a huge smile.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
This week Anderson has been back in the Bay Area where he played football at Bethel High, community college football at Laney College and then NCAA football at Cal. It is also where he had his breakthrough game a year ago in the NFL at Oakland against the Raiders. However, the 2014 Pro Bowler knows that for now, he’s here to work.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“The fact is that I’m here to try and help my teammates win a championship,” Anderson said. “Whether I’m far from home or at home, I have to treat this as if I’m playing just another game. I have to treat this like I’m in Oakland to play the Raiders. I know what this game holds and how it stacks up to others, but winning the game is the priority. Carolina has a very good defense and is a very good football team. We need to stay in the moment.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Anderson also said that his trip to the Super Bowl this year is a little easier to not get caught up in all the hoopla that surrounds the big event for two weeks.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“Two years ago, I had never been to New York in my life at that time,” Anderson said. “This time it’s easier to get ready for the game because I’ve already been up and down everywhere in California. I’ve been to San Francisco, I’ve been to the Mission, I’ve done all of that. So the festivities are not as big this time.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Anderson said that he’s left it up to his mom and his grandma, Barbara Gaddies, to handle who gets tickets to the game at Levi’s Stadium.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“My mom is taking care of that,” Anderson said with a laugh. “I’ve cut it down to about five people. Five people get to go to the Super Bowl but I think that’s it.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Hundreds of Anderson’s fans in Vallejo, however, will be watching the game and cheering him on from other venues.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
The Empress Theatre is holding an event and has his name up on the marquee. Jeff Turner, Anderson’s former head coach at Bethel, said he’ll be happily watching the game from his home.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“You know as an athletic director, I don’t get enough time to spend with my family, so I’ll be watching from home,” Turner said. “I’m looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to building new memories of him. Me and my son will be yelling at C.J. on the television. ‘Good run C.J.! Good catch C.J.! Hold on to the ball C.J.!’”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
This time around in the Super Bowl, Turner will have a lot more opportunities to cheer for him.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Two years ago Anderson was a reserve and he entered the game late and had two carries for nine yards to go with one reception.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Since then, the 2009 Bethel graduate has seen more action than a Sears catalog near Christmas. Last season he was named the NFL’s Player of the Week and he made his first Pro Bowl.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
This season he has split time with Ronnie Hillman, but shined in the last few months. He had a game-winning touchdown in November to give the Patriots their first loss of the season, scored a touchdown in a playoff win against the Steelers and had 72 yards in the AFC championship game two weeks ago. Anderson knows that his number will be called eventually in Super Bowl 50.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“I think more than anything I need to protect the ball,” Anderson said. “We can’t have any turnovers. We (himself and Ronnie Hillman) need to be patient in the running game. Me and Ronnie are going to have our spots. When we get a chance to have those spots, we need to hurt them (the Panthers).”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
In 1998, the Broncos won the Super Bowl and owner Pat Bowlen showed his appreciation for then-starting quarterback John Elway with his remark, “This one is for John!” Nearly two decades later as Bowlen is ill with Alzheimer’s disease, talk has circulated about the Broncos returning the favor and “winning one for Pat.” There has also been talk that the game may be the last for Denver’s legendary quarterback Peyton Manning and the Broncos trying to win the game for him.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“You know, I don’t really know him (Bowlen) that well but I hear a lot of great things about him,” Anderson said. “We want to win for him but all year long we’ve played for each other. We play for the other 53 guys in the room. Of course we want to win for Peyton, of course we want to win for DeMarcus Ware, who’s had a great NFL career and never won one. But we mostly play for ourselves, the fans and the great city of Denver.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
Anderson also admitted that he wants to make Vallejo proud. On March 5, Anderson will be inducted into the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame. Now, he just wants to add another note to his always-growing resume and have the Vallejo Hall of Fame add the words “Super Bowl champion.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11.326px;">
“I love my family, I love the city of Vallejo,” Anderson said. “It feels good to have people there be behind me. Hopefully I can bring them a championship on Sunday.”</div>

<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">What have you and your family been up to since "The Blind Side?"</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">TUOHY: </span>It has been an amazing journey. Literally not one part of it was anticipated. Since the book and movie came out, Sean and I have written our own book, I've written books, and we spend most of our time on the road doing motivational speaking.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
We are big proponents of the saying, "to whom much is given, much is required," so we try to give back as much as we can. Some people have opinions about how we do it, but those opinions have never mattered to me. We have to get up in the morning and do what's right, and if that offends people then they're just going to have to be offended. There are amazing people in this world that just need an opportunity. Those people are what our family is all about, and all three of our kids are great stewards of that message.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
S.J. is 22 now, and plays basketball for Loyola University in Maryland. We watered and fed the little squirt and he grew up. He's my smart kid — Momma's very excited about this child that I haven't had to spoon feed like Collins and Michael. I was very much a helicopter mom with those two, but haven't needed to be with S.J.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Collins is 29, and she's the little queen — my boys spoil her rotten. Believe it or not — with a mother who doesn't cook at all — Collins owns a boutique gourmet cookie company called <a href="http://www.whimsycookieco.com/" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #f37226; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Whimsy</a> that is wildly successful. The cookies are to die for, and the Panthers get cookies three times a week in their locker room. Cam Newton gets his own box every week, and he takes great offense if anyone so much as looks at his cookies. Collins is getting married in April to a great guy who we just love to death. I've told her I'm way more excited about the Super Bowl than her wedding, and that she's not allowed to ask me any more questions about the wedding until the Super Bowl is over.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
And you know where Michael is, of course — headed to San Francisco!</div>
<div class="inline-img-container" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; text-align: center;">

The Tuohy family celebrate together on the field after Michael's 2013 Super Bowl win with the Baltimore Ravens.</div>
</figure></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">Speaking of Michael, I've seen a lot of media reports saying he does not like the movie — is that true? And, do you like it?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">TUOHY:</span> Michael does like the movie. I think what happened was one time, Michael played a great game, and the first thing the reporter asked him after was about the movie. So Michael said, "Don't ask me about the movie. I don't like the movie."</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
The truth of the matter is that he does not dislike the movie — he dislikes the attention that it draws to him. Most people in the country can't name an offensive lineman, period, and that's good. They're supposed to be the unsung heroes, the guys behind the scene.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Unfortunately for Michael, he's very recognizable. If there is a football game going on, referees watch him because of the movie — he gets watched more closely, which leads to questions about what he did or did not do right. He gets dissected a little more than any other lineman.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
It's made him decide to step his game up and do everything right. As a parent, that's what we told our kids anyway — do the right thing and you don't get in trouble. If you lead a charmed life, you better act like it.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
So, Michael understands that the movie sends a good message, and that far outweighs the fact that he gets watched closely in football. I told him, "Look, honey, you're going to have to get over it."</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
It's a great movie. We were really pleased. The fact of the matter is, everyone has a story and ours just happens to be the one that was told. When people see this movie, they realize there are other Michael Ohers out there who can make something of their lives if someone just turns around and asks how they can help.</div>
<div class="inline-img-container" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; text-align: center;">

<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">Everyone refers to you as, "The Blind Side Mom," but as a mother, does that make you feel stuck in a single role? What else do you hope to be known for?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">TUOHY: </span>Making people realize that families do not have to match — that you don't have to look like someone to love them. If I'm not known for anything else in this whole world, I want people to know this — if there's not someone in your social circle who doesn't look like you, then shame on you.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
In this world we live in, racism is alive and well in all venues. We immediately categorize people, and that's just not right. As a country, we have to stop judging people. I love Michael Oher as much as I love my two biological children. There's no difference in them.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
I'd like to be known for stepping up, and encouraging others to do the same.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">The message of your latest book, "Turn Around," is about just that — stepping up and giving cheerfully of your time and resources to help others. What advice do you give to people who want to do more of those things?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">TUOHY: </span>I am continually bombarded with questions about just this. People want to know how they can get involved, how they can make a difference, what they can do, and I wanted the book to inspire people to just do something.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
I want to see a revolution of kindness, because what happens is, when you're kind and you give, it's infectious. You give one time, and it's a great feeling and you want to do it again and again.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Even if you do one kind thing a week — that's progression, that's moving the needle. It's all about starting with you and making a ripple effect. Start on your street, then your neighborhood, then your city.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
We need people to get involved and make a difference. Money is not going to change it — it's about people. It's about us realizing that everyone has value and about being nice to the guy next to you.</div>
<div class="inline-img-container" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; text-align: center;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">So, what advice would you give to the parents out there, wondering how they raise their own little Super Bowl player or entrepreneur? How did you raise three successful, compassionate kids?</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">TUOHY:</span> We believe that when you lead a charmed life — meaning that you have two parents, you have a roof over your head, you get to go to school and you get three meals a day — you need to act like it, cherish it, and value it.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
To help them live up to that belief, there were rules to be followed. You make good grades, you don't have a curfew. You don't get a speeding ticket or drink and drive, you get to use a car. It's not hard — but you do have to parent.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Look at their cell phone; know their friends — because when you stop knowing your kids' business and who they're hanging out with, you have stopped parenting. If you don't parent, then don't cry about who your kid is becoming.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #525252; font-family: proxima_nova, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 23.25px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
It's about investing time in your kids, just like you invest time in all the other important things in your life.</div>

Vince Lombardi's mighty Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 that day in front of 61,946 fans. The five guys had enough fun at what is now known as Super Bowl I that they decided to go to the next year's game. They haven't stopped attending the big game since.</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
On Sunday, that same group of friends, known as the "Super Bowl Five," will be in attendance at Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California, when the Panthers take on the Broncos. Sylvan Schefler, Lew Rappaport, Al Schragis, Larry McDonald and Harvey Rothenberg will have attended all 50 Super Bowls since the game's humble beginnings in the Los Angeles Coliseum nearly a half-century ago.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="font-size: 1.25em; line-height: 1.55;"><a href="http://www.today.com/news/meet-5-friends-who-have-attended-every-single-super-bowl-t70936" target="_blank">The Super Bowl Five</a>, who range in age from their late 70s to early 80s, sat down with Savannah Guthrie on TODAY Friday for their first collective interview about their unique experience.</span></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"Nothing is forever," Schefler said. "We all understand that. But we've been blessed to have had the opportunity to say this is 50 years."</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"We're devoted to each other, and we're devoted to the Super Bowl,'' Rothenberg said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
The group has their own "Super Bowl Five" jackets and rings, and even a racehorse they named "Super Bowl Five." They go by the nicknames Prez, Prof, Chicago Lew, Larry Mac and The Fog when they're together. The men also have adhered to one rule all this years: No wives with them at the game.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"One or two times my wife would come (on the trip),'' Rothenberg said. "While we were at the game, she'd come and go into my hotel room and wait for me to come back."</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"That was your wife?" McDonald joked.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"That wasn't your wife,'' Rappaport said. "Who you kidding? We were there. Your wife has red hair?"</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
The friends have witnessed every iconic Super Bowl moment, from Joe Namath's Jets stunning the heavily-favored Colts to John Taylor's winning touchdown catch in the final seconds for the 49ers to Scott Norwood's missed field goal late in the game against the New York Giants.</div>
<div class="inline-img-container" style="box-sizing: border-box; text-align: center;">
<figure class="entry-img retina-enabled" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: inline-block; line-height: 1.25em; margin: 1em auto; max-width: 100%; text-align: right;"><img alt="The Super Bowl 5" class="j-entry-img" src="http://media3.s-nbcnews.com/j/newscms/2016_05/960426/tdy_superbowlgrab2_160204_6849f71991ed7a52135bf1548a345017.today-inline-large.jpg" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline-block; max-height: 690px; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" title="The Super Bowl 5" /></figure></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
While the Giants' 20-19 thriller over the Bills in 1991 was sweet for the group, four of whom grew up in New York, it was the Giants' 17-14 upset of the previously undefeated New England Patriots in 2008 that stands out for them. That game featured the famous "Helmet Catch" by Giants receiver David Tyree.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<a href="http://www.today.com/news/twin-autism-forms-special-bond-brother-football-field-t59691" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; box-sizing: border-box; color: #f37226; text-decoration: none;">RELATED: Twin with autism forms special bond with brother, on and off the football field</a></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"To me, that was the best of all to beat the Patriots,'' Schefler said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
The five buddies have also seen the halftime show metastasize from a marching band at the first game to the Katy Perry-led spectacle of last year's game. They also witnessed Janet Jackson's famous "wardrobe malfunction" with Justin Timberlake during halftime of the 2004 game.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"Lew said to me, 'Prez, look at this!''' Schragis said. "I said, 'What?' I almost missed it. But I saw it."</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
There also have been some solemn moments for the group, notably the 1991 game in which Whitney Houston memorably sang the national anthem during the height of the Gulf War. All five of the men are military veterans.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"There was not a dry eye in the whole stadium,'' Schefler said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"That was the most emotional time I think we've ever had,'' McDonald said.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
The Super Bowl Five have kept their tradition despite personal hurdles over the years. Rothenberg's father died only a week before the game one year.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"They all insisted that I have to go,'' Rothenberg said. "And I went, but you know, with a lot of pain in my heart."</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
McDonald couldn't afford to go one year in the 1970s when the construction business was experiencing a downturn, but the others pitched in to pay for him to make the trip.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"Wait a minute,'' Rothenberg said to McDonald. "You still owe us money!"</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
Throughout it all, they have created an amazing tradition, one they don't plan on breaking any time soon.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
"I've been thinking about 60,'' Rappaport said. "Super Bowl 60 and where we're gonna go, and if we're gonna still play golf. That's what I've been thinking about."</div>

Roll the outer edge of the crust over to create a neat ridge at the edge of the pie dish. Scallop the edge, if desired.</li>

Brush a thin layer of the egg wash onto the visible edge of the pie crust.</li>
<li class="instruction"><img alt="" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-18314" height="480" src="http://toriavey.com/images/2012/11/Sarah-Josepha-Hale-Apple-Pudding-6-640x480.jpg" title="Sarah Josepha Hale Apple Pudding 6" width="640" />Place the puddings into the oven and bake for 80-90 minutes, or until the pudding no longer wiggles in the center and is browning in places around the outer edge of the crust. Err on the side of cooking it longer, rather than shorter—if you undercook the pudding, it will turn out quite mushy. If the crust is browning faster than the pudding is baking, cover the outer crust edge with a layer of foil, leaving the pudding exposed in the center.</li>
<li class="instruction">When the pudding is fully cooked, remove it from the oven and allow to cool. Decorate the top of the pudding with candied lemon peels - recipe can be found on <a href="http://toriavey.com/how-to/2012/11/how-to-make-candied-lemon-peels/">ToriAvey.com</a>.</li>

Keep leftovers refrigerated for 3-4 days.</li>

<div class="entry entrytext">
It’s swim season! Whether you have a child or teen on a swim team, or you’ve joined the Masters class at your local Y, it’s important to learn about good nutrition for swimmers. Making smart choices will help boost performance at practice and meets.<br /><br />What do swimmers need? The Aquatic Sports Association advises swimmers eat a diet with “lots of fruit, lots of vegetables, plenty of protein…[and] complex or fibrous carbohydrates.”[1] USA Swimming additionally recommends hydrating with two to three swigs of fluid every 20 minutes.[2] Here’s the lowdown on each recommendation:<br /><br />· <b>Hydration: </b>Swimmers are surrounded by water, so it may seem counter-intuitive that they need more, but exercising while wet means you may not notice you’re sweating and losing fluids. Water is the best way to hydrate, so just take a water bottle with you to the pool, and leave it at the end of the lane you’re swimming in so you’ll actually drink from it! Energy drinks may seem like a good idea, but only if you’re swimming for 90 minutes or more. Look at the label and choose carefully; some are little more than sugar water.<br /><br />· <b>Fruits:</b> Most fruit is easily digested and makes a good pre-workout or between-races snack. Fruits are also generally high in vitamin C, which means they support immunity, so a summer cold doesn’t keep you out of the water on race day. The following fruits are the quickest to break down: ripe bananas, papayas, plums, nectarines, peaches and melons, including watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe.[3]<br /><br />· <b>Vegetables: </b>Dr. G. John Mullen, a coach and swimming researcher, recommends swimmers eat more vegetables: “Veggies are the injury prevention of nutrition, as everyone comprehends the importance, but neglects it.”[4] The Aquatic Sports Association recommends eating a wide range of colored vegetables, but particularly green ones like broccoli and cabbage and red ones like beets.<br /><br />· <b>Carbohydrates: </b>Swimming expends a lot of energy, and carbohydrates are the body’s go-to source for making more. Complex carbohydrates like whole grains burn more slowly and are healthier fuel than refined carbohydrates like cookies, cakes, or other junk food.<br /><br />· <b>Protein: </b>Protein repairs muscle fibers damaged during exercise, promotes muscle growth, and helps young athletes grow. A post-practice snack of hummus on pita or peanut butter on banana or apple slices can help aid recovery.<br /><br /><b>Tips for Competitive Swimmers<br /></b>· Avoid new foods right before a competition in case they don’t agree with you.<br />
· If you feel too nervous to eat before a meet, try <a href="http://www.juiceplus.com/content/JuicePlus/en/what-is-juice-plus/complete.html#.VZq1EBtViko">Juice Plus+ Complete</a>, a whole-food based beverage mix that provides balanced nutrition in every scoop.<br />
· Have healthy, on-the-go snacks handy if you need to eat on the way to practice. Good choices include fresh or dried fruit, fresh raw veggies like carrot sticks, and Juice Plus+ Complete nutrition bars, featuring fruits and wholesome grains.<br />
· Try eating small, frequent meals to keep your blood sugar steady. This may especially help teen swimmers, who are expending a lot of calories during a period of rapid growth, avoid unhealthy snacks when hunger strikes.<br />
· Eat a small meal or snack 1-2 hours before training. Fruit, vegetables, and Juice Plus+ Complete beverage mixes and nutrition bars are good choices.<br />
· Refuel with carbohydrates and protein within 30 minutes of a workout.<br />

Today, September 3, 2015 marks the 15th year anniversary of my Father's passing in 2000. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">My parents divorced when I was going into 6th grade, 11 years old. I know that I loved my Dad, but I was happy when my parents divorced. My Dad was what I hear now-a-days referred to as the "absentee parent". My Mom pretty much did it all with us and for us. I really wish things were different with our relationship, but it really never was. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">There were some memories that I have of him that I think of fondly. We had a very very large backyard and we had a little tiny walnut tree in the back where my Dad had a garden and then fenced in an area around the walnut tree and we raised a pig named "Charlie" and he also had an old bathtub that was filled with dirt and everyone in the neighborhood brought over there vegetable scraps to put in the worm tub and then they got worms from him to go fishing. I guess this was a lesson of composting for me when I was young. He also canned some great pickles that I wish I could get the recipe from his wife. And then we went every year to Del Mar Race Track for family vacation which consisted of him at the races and us with my Mom at the pools or around San Diego. Santa Anita Race track was another place. And always a drink in the hand. So mixed reviews on the memories. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">I will say, that when my son became about 8 years old, he loved my Dad, and I feel that he was a good grandparent to Matthew. I am sorry that my Dad did suffer through a heart attack and then cancer and that was extremely difficult for him. He passed away at a young age too. Rest in Peace Dad....8/1/1942 - 9/3/2000. He was 58 years old and today would be 73 years old. </span><br />

Cars and trucks sit in a line from Georgia Street to Florida Street along Mare Island Way, part of the hundreds of Vallejoans who waited in the blocks around Vallejo’s City Hall on Saturday to take advantage of the city’s free ‘Dump Day’ at City Hall. MIKE JORY — VALLEJO TIMES-HERALD
The line of cars stretched for blocks on Saturday morning, lined up from the parking lot of City Hall on Santa Clara Street, heading northward to Florida Street and then from Mare Island Way to Georgia Street.<br />A huge number of residents driving pickup trucks, some U-Haul vans and even a few sedans were packed to the brim waited for the chance to drop off the items that have crowded their Vallejo garages, bedrooms, yards and more.<br />
Dump Day had officially begun.<br />
Residents endured what officials estimated was nearly a two-hour wait to leave their trash in city dumpsters, free of charge.<br />
<br />
Sorted into different categories, cars were directed through the City Hall parking lot, dropping off e-waste such as computers, old tube televisions and vacuums, or tires and furniture items, to general trash.<br />
<br />
Jeff Kruljac, operations supervisor at Recology, said that when workers first arrived at City Hall at 6:30 a.m. to set up dumpsters, at least 20 residents were waiting to get a jump on the line.<br />
<br />
<br />
When asked at noon how many residents had come through — with only an hour left before the end time for Dump Day — Kruljac was at a loss.<br />
<br />
“I can’t even begin to tell you,” Kruljac said from the head of the line of cars. “It’s been a constant stream since we opened up the gates at 8 o’clock. This line has not stopped.”<br />
Kruljac said that four hours into the event, organizers had hauled at least 15 dumpsters full of trash by his estimate, saying the goal was to “get ‘em in, load ‘em up and move ‘em on.” Mattresses and tires were two items that the company had received a number of and Kruljack said that they had hauled away five or six trucks each, of both items.<br />
According to Vallejo’s recycling coordinator, Derek Crutchfield, by his estimates about 600 participants had come through the City Hall parking lot at noon — with plenty more lined up to drop off items. To deal with the volume of cars, organizers said they would cut the line of residents off at 1 p.m. and allow everyone already in line to continue to leave their items.<br />
Due to an unclear report from the Times-Herald, a number of residents had left several trash items at City Hall just a week before, totalling 14,000 pounds of trash that were hauled away by city and Recology workers. In spite of that event, Crutchfield said that he was not expecting a crowd of this size on Saturday.<br />
“I didn’t expect this at all,” Crutchfield said of the line of cars. “This is way more than I anticipated. I thought it would be busy and I anticipated it maybe going up the street, but I didn’t anticipate it looping back around (to Mare Island Way).”<br />
Although those in the line suggested that Dump Day should be a monthly event, Crutchfield said that he hoped to hold another event like this soon. Addressing the wait times, Crutchfield said that while he was pleased with the turnout, there is room for improvement.<br />“We’ll just try to do it again in the fall,” Crutchfield said. “This will help us to plan better for the next event and hopefully we’ll get better at it.”<br />
With the large amount of trash generated by Dump Day, the upside was that the trash collected would not be illegally dumped on the streets of Vallejo.<br />
A group of 12 men from House of Acts, a substance abuse treatment program in Vallejo, were on hand to help residents load items off their trucks and into dumpsters. Jose Madrigal was part of that group, saying that their workforce program directly deals with illegal dumping and that they’re the ones who wind up picking up items left around Vallejo. Madrigal said it felt good that the city was collecting all this trash.<br />
“...This helps for people doing illegal dumping,” Madrigal said. “A lot of times, like the alleyways that we clean, a lot of people do that: They throw all their stuff in the alley. It’s cool that they’re doing this because it brings (illegal dumping) down a lot.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12971411588450504638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-840498140859185978.post-53231001813852395712015-08-21T10:22:00.000-07:002015-08-21T10:22:06.300-07:00Olympian Jason Lezak stops by Cunningham Pool<a href="http://www.timesheraldonline.com/sports/20150629/olympian-jason-lezak-stops-by-cunningham-pool?source=most_viewed" target="_blank">Olympic gold medalist Jason Lezak</a><br />

Olympian Jason Lezak stops by Cunningham Pool<br />
<br />
Two years after retiring from a stellar swimming career, Olympic champion Jason Lezak is hoping to inspire younger swimmers to follow in his footsteps.<br />
<br />
<br />
The eight-time Olympic medalist, referred to by many as “The Anchor,” decided to make port in Vallejo on Thursday to give dozens of young swimmers at Cunningham Pool autographs, photo opportunities and swimming pointers. <br />
<br />
“I blocked about a week of time this summer to head up to Northern California and just see if teams or people wanted some help,” Lezak said. “I get a big mix of kids at this one and I get to share stories and teach them a few things. I made a lot of mistakes early in my swimming career and when I look back sometimes, I say to myself that I wish I would have done this, or I wish I would have done that. There are some kids here that are really serious about swimming but there are also a lot that are just having a good time.”<br />
<br />
Lezak won eight medals, including four gold medals in his career that saw him compete in the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic games. He also owns long-course world records in the 400-meter freestyle and medley relays. He may be known more than anything for his role in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing where in the final 25 meters of the 4-by-100 relay race he came from behind France’s Alain Bernard to win the race for the United States and give teammate Michael Phelps his record-breaking eighth gold medal in one Olympic games.<br />
<br />
<br />
Dylan Powell, who lives in Vallejo and swam at Diablo Valley College, was 12 when Lezak starred in the 2008 games. On Thursday the 19-year-old Powell was thrilled to finally meet his idol.<br />
<br />
“I remember watching his amazing, perfect swim in 2008 and it was like a dream finally coming true to finally meet him,” Powell said. “When I walked on deck I thought I was going to pass out. I was like, ‘Here is the guy. Here is the guy I’ve looked up to and he’s seven feet in front of me.’ So it felt great to finally shake his hand.”<br />
<br />
Powell would be part of one of Lezak’s demonstrations in the pool as the Olympian discussed how to perform a perfect streamline. A streamline form is used at the start of a race to help create the least amount of resistance to help the swimmer propel as far as they can.<br />
<br />
Powell and Lezak had a competition to see who could streamline the furthest. The crowd of swimmers cheered as Powell matched Lezak’s distance.<br />
<br />
“I was just honored to be in (Lezak’s) presence,” Powell said. “I was extremely nervous and just wanted to make sure I didn’t slip on the block and do a complete belly-flop into the pool. I just focused on doing my dive right so I could make him proud.”<br />
<br />
<br />Vallejo’s Charity Donato, 11, was also thrilled to meet Lezak.<br />
<br />
“He was really inspiring and he talked a lot about the Olympics,” Donato said. “I was really happy to meet him and it was cool to be wearing the actual gold medal he won when I had my picture taken with him. I had a bag, a swim cap and a shirt autographed by him.”<br />
<br />
The 39-year-old Lezak said the decision to retire in 2013 was not a difficult one.<br />
<br />
“The number one thing is my body felt ready to be done,” Lezak said, with a laugh. “Although, since I retired it’s nice because I get to do things like this a lot more often. Sometimes when I was training I wasn’t able to help kids at clinics like this as much as I wanted.”<br />
<br />
Lezak also stressed that the most important thing to do while swimming was to have a good time.<br />
<br />
“For a lot of the young kids they are here just to have fun,” Lezak said. “At the same time I see some of these young kids and you can see the look in their face and it’s the same one I had. The main focus is to try and keep this about being fun.”<br />

Keeping your body in top physical/physiological form will assist you in growing through the grieving process. <br />
Take control of your physical well-being by doing what you can every day: eat regular meals, full of nutritious foods; and limit junk food. <br />
Get enough sleep, even if that means taking naps during the day – but beware of too much sleep. Sinking into the sofa to sleep the day away is a sure sign of depression. <br />
Watch out for “creeping addictions”: alcohol and drugs (illicit or prescribed; even over-the-counter medications) will only delay grieving, and make it a more difficult process all together. <br />
Exercise regularly. Even just a walk around the block, on a regular basis, can help to restore your mental and physical well-being. <br />
<br />
Quotation for the Day<br />
<br />
"Pain (any pain--emotional, physical, and mental) has a message. The information it has about our life can be remarkably specific, but it usually falls into one of two categories: 'We would be more alive if we did more of this,' and, 'Life would be more lovely if we did less of that.' Once we get the pain's message, and follow its advice, the pain goes away." ~Peter McWilliams<br />

<br />
<br />
As you work toward restoring your life after loss, recognize the power of anger for self-destruction – and harness it for growth instead. How? By recognizing that it’s okay to be angry – it’s a healthy human emotion that (when accepted and expressed) enables you to heal. Deal with it in constructive ways – discharging its energy in the following ways. <br />

<br />
<br />
However, as we plan our daily activities, even the simplest one, it’s possible to put a more desirable, or “positive”, spin. That brighter outlook, that positivity expands in a positive direction – leading more swiftly to increased joy and recovery from loss.<br />

<br />
<br />
Be Kind to Your Self <br />
<br />
Many things keep you stuck in a place I like to call “self-bashing”. While you’re grieving the feelings of guilt and anger are especially powerful – they can send you into a tail-spin of blame and self-criticism. The physical effects of grief, such as sleeplessness, lack of hunger, and depression can bring you into that dark place too, where you feel it’s appropriate to be less than kind to your Self. <br />
<br />
Quotation for the Day <br />
<br />
"Self-care means honoring and respecting the miraculous being that you are. Self-care means learning to listen with the ear of a dedicated mother to your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and then taking full responsibility for getting them met. Self-care means taking 100% responsibility for creating an environment that nurtures your physical, emotional and spiritual selves." ~ Carl Benedict<br />
